       Energy Reduction                                                  Ammonia Process Improvement

Pilot Plant Demonstration                                      Technology Adoption - New or Revamp Plants

About the Project:  SmartKoncept Technology in collaboration with the University of South Carolina Research Foundation are undertaking a US Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored project for process improvement and energy reduction in the Ammonia Production Process.  The key objective of this project is to design, develop and demonstrate a new process for efficient production of ammonia.

This four-year project started in 2007 with the development of a new innovative concept for energy reduction and process performance improvement for Ammonia production processes. By the end of 2008, a fully functional experimental pilot scale based on the new concept was successfully built. Further experimental data gathering and design validation are on going.

Applications & Benefits: This project when completed would cut energy consumption in ammonia processes by as much as one-third, reduce raw material usage, capital costs, while also enhancing safety in ammonia production industry in the US. The new approach will increase ammonia yield and reduce natural gas feedstock and fuel consumption. The improved ammonia process will find application in the U.S. chemical industry, which produced 23.7 billion pounds of ammonia in 2004. It would be applicable to both the retrofit revamp of existing ammonia plants and for the design and construction of new green fields ammonia production plants.

The project would also have significant environmental and safety benefits, including it's application in the US power and utility generation industry where ammonia is used in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) systems, to reduce NOx formation & remove CO2 from flue gas. The new technology is scalable and will enable direct production of ammonia “on-demand or on need” basis, thereby also simplifying supply logistics, while safety is also improved.

Potential Technology Adoption:  Some US power / utility generation companies, including the Dallas Texas based TXU Energy are working with SmartKoncept Technology on potential early adoption of this technology when completed.

If your company would be interested in this technology either for retrofit revamp application to reduce the energy consumption and improve process improvement efficiency or in the design of a new ammonia production plant, please contact us.
